Exclusive Interview with Wynne Channing, author of What Kills Me

Wynne Channing, YA author of What Kills Me granted us an exclusive interview with her! Here’s the whole interview. Happy Reading! Read my review here: Read: What Kills Me by Wynne Channing.

What Kills Me Cover SmallME: Hi Wynne! Thank you for giving me a chance to do an interview with you here at Ramblings of a YA Reader. Your debut novel, What Kills Me, is really really really good! I loved it. Can you tell our readers – who haven’t read it yet – a short description?

WC: Hi Lexie! Thank you so much for the opportunity to chat with you about What Kills Me! Of course, What Kills Me is a paranormal adventure novel about bravery and survival. It begins with an ancient prophecy warning of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race. So when 17-year-old Axelia (Zee) falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vampire, the immortal empire believes she is this legendary destroyer.

ME: Why Vampires?

WC: I’ve always been fascinated by these lonely monsters. I think you can’t live hundreds of years without being seriously messed up — which makes for interesting stories. As a reporter, I interviewed Neil Jordan who directed Interview With A Vampire and he said that vampire stories are often emblematic of a number of themes: sexuality, death, etc. There’s so much you can say through these pale creatures.

ME: What was your favorite part of the book to write and why?

WC: Every time Axelia and her ally, Lucas, fight, it makes me laugh. Their banter is the highlight of my days. I laugh even harder when he’s mean to her. (What is wrong with me?!?)

ME: Describe What Kills Me in three (3) Words… GO!

WC: Can’t put down.

ME: I noticed that What Kills Me was a fast paced book. Correct me if I’m wrong but why did you make it like that? I first thought that it was just a stand-alone book since there’s no title name for the series.

WC: Yes, I wanted it to be a non-stop ride. I planned it so that every chapter ended with a relative cliffhanger. I wrote What Kills Me as the first in a three-part series (things I mention are fleshed out in later books, ie. the rebellion, Lucas’s brother, Zee’s family) but I wanted to gauge fan reaction before I devoted my time to a sequel. Now that readers are asking for the sequel, it encourages me to keep going with Zee and Lucas’s story.

ME: What was the hardest part to write in the book?

WC: Whenever my favorite characters die, it sucks to write.

ME: I think most of us who already read the book would want to know… When will the second book comes out? Or if it already has some tentative title?

WC: The second book is slated to come out in the summer 2013. I don’t have a tentative title as yet. Do you have any suggestions?

ME: What would YOU like your readers to know about this book or you in general?

WC: I want readers to know that I wrote this book for them — to take them away on a roller coaster and give them characters that they recognize and that would inspire them.

ME: Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

WC: I am so grateful for everyone’s support. I never imagined that What Kills Me would get this kind of response and I’ve never done more happy dances in my life. (Thanks for your fan letters!)

ME: What is your greatest fear as a writer?
I don’t have any writer fears. I have normal people fears: zombies, serial killers, Japanese ghost girls, etc.

ME: When you are not reading or writing, what can you be found doing?

WC: I’m running around the city reporting or I’m teaching and performing Latin dance.

ME: I saw in your blog that you are a national newspaper reporter. How did you managed to manage your time between being a reporter and a young adult novelist?

WC: I have no clue. Seriously. I did not sleep for six months. I basically became a zombie reporter in the day.

ME: What type of music do you like to listen to?

WC: Right now, I’m listening to Adele as I do this interview :-)

ME: What is a day in the life of Wynne Channing like?

WC: Every day is different which is awesome. Let’s use yesterday as an example. In the morning, I wrote a newspaper article. In the afternoon, I shot a video for the newspaper’s website. Then I answered reader emails and publicized my novel. I went straight to a dance performance in the evening. Had a late dinner with friends. Came home and worked on the What Kills Me sequel until the wee hours. I think I had time to pee and breathe in between but I can’t remember…

ME: Can you tell us about the sequel?

WC: At the end of What Kills Me, Zee finds herself in a very unique position. How will the Monarchy handle the startling development? Will they take her in and worship her? Or will they imprison her forever? I’m busy pinning inspiration for Book Two on Pinterest and storyboarding the plot. Zee’s powers will continue to grow. Her relationship with Lucas will evolve. You’ll meet a new cast of characters including members of the rebellion, Lucas’s brother, etc. Maybe you’ll get to meet Zee’s family and her best friend. But for sure, there will be more twists, more deceit, lots of action, and well, blood.

ME: Finish this sentence “I can’t live without…”

WC: Hope.

Random Questions:

Day or Night?
Night.

Paranormal or Dystopian?
Ooh, tough because my current project is paranormal but my next book is dystopian.

Dogs or cats?
Dogs.

Coffee or Tea?
Tea. Love loose leaf tea.

Physical books or Ebooks?
Ebooks. Less to carry.

Tips on Zombie Invasion? LOL.
First of all don’t go running around the city because that is just stupid. You’re going to get killed immediately. Find a weapon, maybe a baseball bat (axes seem like a good idea but they get stuck in skulls and you have to pull them out — by then, a zombie is taking a bite out of your face) and run to the nearest grocery store. Stock up on food. Then find a secure place to hole up for a while. What would you do? I love advice, write me and give me some.

BOTW: Wallbanger by Alice Clayton {3rd December 2012}

My friends and I started making a Book of The Week or BOTW again. Yes, again. LOL. Since we do group reads irregularly. ;) But we’ll try to make it regular now. Will do a group read every Friday. So here’s the first for this week but actually we got two this week. I’m still finishing up the last one.

 BLURB:

Caroline Reynolds has a fantastic new apartment in San Francisco, a KitchenAid mixer, and no O (and we’re not talking Oprah here, folks). She has a flourishing design career, an office overlooking the bay, a killer zucchini bread recipe, and no O. She has Clive (the best cat ever), great friends, a great rack, and no O.

Adding insult to O-less, since her move, she has an oversexed neighbor with the loudest late-night wallbanging she’s ever heard. Each moan, spank, and–was that a meow?–punctuates the fact that not only is she losing sleep, she still has, yep, you guessed it, no O.

Enter Simon Parker. (No, really, Simon, please enter.) When the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. Their late-night hallway encounter has, well, mixed results. Ahem. With walls this thin, the tension’s gonna be thick…

In her third novel, Alice Clayton returns to dish her trademark mix of silly and steamy. Banter, barbs, and strutting pussycats, plus the sexiest apple pie ever made, are dunked in a hot tub and set against the gorgeous San Francisco skyline in this hot and hilarious tale of exasperation at first sight.

Review:

Enjoying it. :) OMG. Clive is awesome! LOL. That last part is funny. The one that got away… :D

Will do a review after I finished Opal. ;)

I really did enjoyed reading it for the most part. From the start it was funny. And I could totally imagine her hearing all that noise at the other side of that wall. I laughed at Clive when he heard the “meow” thingy and then he attacked jumped that wall and scratch it trying to join them at the other side. :D

That is so freakin’ hilarious plus when Clive finally met Purina. :P He was like “Purrrreeeeennnnyyyaaaa…” And he ran after the poor girl. That one was so EPIC in so MANY LEVELS that I can’t get over it. Really, Clive, I wonder how did he know that THAT girl was Purina. From her voice? Maybe. All I am saying is that I want my OWN CLIVE. :P

So yes, it certainly had boring moments. And that sex scene? OMG. It’s so freakin long. LOL. That part in Caroline’s apartment? Ugh. I was like, please stop it already. I know you had your O back but I don’t need to suffer from reading all that sex again and again and again. And talking while sexing? By talking I mean, like that normal talk/discussion… Er… Yeah…

But as I have said, I did enjoy it because their banter is so great and the chemistry is good too. Plus of course, there’s Clive who really made a difference. :P And that last part? Where it’s Clive POV?? I just had to laugh at the last line… The one that got away… :D

Blog Tour: The Keeper’s Curse

I was one of those people who got lucky to participate on The Keeper’s Curse Blog Tour for Diana Harrison. The tour would stop at my blog on 17th of December 2012. The blog tour will start on 11th December to 24th December 2012.

You could read more about the Blog Tour here.

BLURB

After fifteen-year-old Emmy Rathers unintentionally summons a strange glowing cloud during a break-in, her mother rips her from her home, her father, and her world, forever.

When she lands in the rustic, militant land of Methelwood, she is told she’s a crafter – a person who can perform magic by conjuring souls of the dead. But starting life over normally in the midst of grieving for the life she has left behind, while at the same time attempting to fit in in her new war-obsessed school, becomes impossible when she begins to hear a voice in her head. Complicating the matter further is the fact that the voice belongs to a boy at school named Breckin, who just also happens to be the most powerful crafter in the world, and the future ruler of Methelwood.

But that’s not the worst part – suddenly Breckin’s most hostile adversary is coming out of the shadows and trying to kill her. With no other choice, Emmy must travel deeper into this bizarre, dark world she is so unfamiliar with to find out why this is happening to her, and more importantly, how to stay alive.

RAMBLINGS

I know I am a total dork for posting it early. But I am just way excited when I got the email about it and received the tour schedules, the book, and all that things I needed for this blog tour! This would be my first time in joining a blog tour, I haven’t done it even in my blogger.

So I am that excited. :) I’ve been meaning to join a blog tour since forever and I was just scared to try it out back then. But I gathered enough courage and my big girl panties on me so here I am, my blog is one of those stops! :)

There would be also an international giveaway for this book so better tune in and happy reading! :)

Review:

For reals? December 2012? Now, that’s awesome. Just few more months. Please don’t let the RD be moved. >_<

12.04.12 (in my time) UPDATE:Dammit! They released it early!!! Weeee! :) LMAO. I’m gonna read it next after Wallbanger! :)

JUST. WHAT. THE. HELL. WHY DID I EVER READ THIS SERIES?! I blame you, Katy! >:(

I don’t even know what to say! As soon as I read that last line, I plugged in my laptop and while it was booting up, I was busy pacing around my bedroom. I was so frustrated that I need to exhaust myself or something. I then reached for my phone and opened my email to compose one for Katy. I ranted to her as much as I was ranting right now.

First of all it started off a bit sad. With Dawson being not Dawson… You get the point? Well anyway, I still laugh, smirk, and love jerk Daemon but as many pointed out, he is not that much of a douche in Opal. He is so wise that it is surprising. I mean, he got lots of answers for Katy’s questions and not the sarcastic answers or smart-ass one. But answers that have really real meaning.

Second, we all know what happened to Adam at Onyx… So there’s a strain in Dee and Katy’s relationship. I was really sad about that and I kept thinking they would never be together again. They would never mend their broken friendship… Sorry is not enough…

And I really hate Buff, I mean Biff, I mean Blake now. >:( How could he… They should’ve fried him on book two. They shouldn’t let him go. Just kill that damn guy! >:(

Then then.. then… I can’t tell you without spoiling it! I don’t know how. :( Just… It was so frustrating to end like that. Ugh. I don’t know how will I say it anymore.

AND BTW, that SEX scene? I didn’t even notice they were doing it. Just when they already finished. The make-out scenes from the first book was much hotter than the sex scene. How in the world that that happen, I don’t know but that’s what I felt about it.

I am so done with ranting. I need to cool off.

BTW, It’s a total CLIFFHANGER ENDING THAT I JUST WANT TO SLAP THEM IN THE FACE. LOL. But yes, I did get teary eyed cause of what Daemon said before it ends!

Ramblings:

I am almost done with this book, it really is a funny one. From the first chapter up to where I am, which is 85% in and Chapter Twenty. I was laughing my arse off this one. The sex is not always, I mean, they only did it about 80% in. You’ll definitely enjoy their easy and naughty banter. And I personally love Clive the cat. That cat is so freakin’ funny as hell. Definitely worth a read even though I haven’t finished it yet. But I was cramming it cause I need to read Opal. I need to! And if you want to read my entire review of Wallbanger just go to my review at Goodreads. You’ll have to wait for like hours before I get on to my review of Wallbanger. ;)

Subic Bay Freeport Trip: 30th November 2012

Remember when I said that I’ll be going out to some Field Trip? Well, here you go! It’s a National Holiday in my country, Philippines that’s why we got this field trip good to go! I got so many pics and I can’t post it all, could I? I got like 300 pictures in my Olympus digital camera, then in my Samsung Galaxy Tab and some more in my phone. :p Here’s some of the pictures. :)

Camera 360

This first one was from Jest Camp in Subic Bay Freeport. They got birds of different species and I don’t know what kind of bird was it behind me. We got there like 8:30 in the morning. We didn’t stay too long since we need to keep up with our schedule.  Continue reading
